Transitioning from baby food to table food.

This week was a bit of new week for us. Micah was on his first round of antibiotics because he's had a pretty serious respiratory infection. Then, I feel like it has come time to transition little man from primarily baby food to primarily table food. I'm not sure why, but the thought has been in my head and today seemed like the day to do it. . It's a whole lot easier to grab a jar of preassembled baby food and go.

However, Micah just keeps showing more interest in my food. Micah has four and a half teeth already! He wants to taste whatever I've got to eat. He wants to try what he sees on my plate. He grabs at my plate. I've fed him table food at several restaurants, and he has done an awesome job. Plus, he likes to spit his baby food at you. All of these add up to some signs that somebody is ready to move on in my mind.

Excuse me for a moment as I go cry just a little bit. ::Sniff. Sniff::

My baby is quickly becoming more grown up with each day!

So in order to help my hubby out, I went to Walmart this morning with Micah to hunt for our first sets of table food. I went with things like cheese, yogurt, lunch meat, leafy veggies, baby carrots, bananas, sweet potatoes, and grapes in mind. The idea was to pre-portion things so it makes it "grab and go" like baby food.

We had a good trip to Walmart & Sams where I still bought some baby food. I also bought him some formula. I came home, and I started the storage of quick food options. A lot of this is a big experiment since he's eaten a handful of table foods. However, almost anything I give to him he will eat so far.

So I went to town on the lunch meat. (I'm starting him with lean turkey this week. One meat at a time to see how he adjusts.) I separated out about six slices pinched up by Mommy. The only thing I don't like about this new feeding thing is how to figure out how much he is eating. I guess we'll get used to it.

I put it on his tray, and I let him try the fruits of my labor. (This also included boiling some carrots and sweet potatoes.) For his first "full" table food meal he had:
1. Turkey
2. Spinach leaves
3. Mozzarella cheese
4. Green grapes
5. Vanilla yogurt

I did this process of separating everything for all the foods we bought. I was taking a gamble on the spinach leaves, but he LOVED them!! Yay for my healthy eating baby boy!!

Just check out this face! This is after I gave him turkey and spinach. He says, "More, please!!"

Micah has his own fridge shelf for easy access for Mommy & Daddy.

All in all I think it was a great success. We followed his meal up with some water and his bottle of formula. I can't believe I have a baby who is eating by himself! It was almost too easy. He ate everything I put in front of him. He's suuuuuuuuccccchhhhh a good, happy baby. Here's hoping he develops healthy eating habits unlike his Mommy. (I'm the worst. We have a do as I say, not as I do situation at our house.)

Do you have any tips for starting table food? When did you start table food with your child? Is ten months too early? Love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Oh I can't believe how big Micah is these days! What a fun stage! It looks like he's enjoying table food, which is awesome! I think it was about the same time that we had "family food" rather than grown-up food and baby food. We eat quite a bit of quinoa and hummus, so that was a big part of Bea's baby diet too. And yes, it is MUCH easier to pack food for travel when it doesn't have to be special baby food.
