The truth about sewing.

Today was a long but productive day. Micah had a doctor's appointment for an upcoming medical procedure that took a good chunk of time. Following that, we went to campus to eat at our favorite hole in the wall Blue Coast Burrito. When we arrived it had closed down! I will now forever dream of the salsa bar filled with pineapple salsa and chips. You have no idea how sad we were today! That lead to us driving all over the city seeking food only to rest upon a Chinese buffet. For the record, I hate Chinese buffets, and Mr. C loves 'em. To me they are just filled with bacteria waiting to procreate and spoon handles oozing with e-coli from some snotty child. YUCK! Every so often for Mr. C's sake, I will give in to make him happy. He hadn't eaten since 3AM, so cheap food in mass quantities was a compromise I was glad to make.

We came home where Mr. C was exhausted. Sometimes working a crazy shift just wears him out. Add that to a man who was going on three hours sleep? One very tired papa. Since he works on Saturdays, he decided to go to bed for the night really early. Micah and I decided to head to my parent's house so that I could go practice some more sewing of burp clothes with my mom while Daddy slept. It was also a great excuse to get some dinner with my parents at Panera Bread! Yummy!

My mom has a large assortment of random fabric, so I spent some time picking out two I thought would compliment each other. In the end I landed on these.

I was doing really well sewing the fabric onto the burp cloths around the edges until I got to this part of the burp cloth. The truth about sewing? I'm not really good at it. The truth about teaching? I have always had trouble cutting a straight line for my bulletin boards. The truth about sewing? I am not that great at it, but at least I have a good teacher!

In the midst of this, Micah was hungry, so I stopped to nurse him for a little while. My mom stepped in to try to cover up my huge, ugly non-straight edge lines. The truth about sewing? If you make a mistake, cover it up!

By the time the night was over after several sewing machine glitches, we finally had a finished product that made me proud. I mean, who wouldn't want to let your baby spit up all over that cute burp cloth?

The truth about sewing? It's not really all that hard (well, burp cloths anyway). I actually like making burp clothes. I have a really wonderful teacher. Thanks, Mama! And I think my grandmother would be proud.

Have a great weekend!

  1. The truth about sewing is, the more you do it, the better you get. And even when you're good at it, you still sew bears' ears on backward sometimes. Like I did yesterday.

The trick to sewing a straight line is using your presser foot and feed dogs as a guide. And never taking your eyes off what you're doing. And not being "helped" by 4-year olds. I can't wait to see what you make next!
